Position Description:
HOCET Secondary School (HSS) is seeking an experienced, dynamic, and certified Kiswahili and Civics Teacher. HSS is a free, private secondary boarding school for orphaned and vulnerable teenagers located in the rural village of Shungubweni in the District of Mkuranga approximately 60 km outside of Dar-es-Salaam. Pay is competitive and based on educational background and work experience. Housing, food, healthcare and benefits are included.
Minimum qualifications:
1. Diploma or university degree or higher
2. Fluent in Swahili and English with strong communication skills
3. At least 2 years of teaching experience
4. Personal and professional commitment to the health, well-being, and empowerment of orphaned and vulnerable youth
5. Commitment to professional development, accountability, integrity, and contributing toward a positive, nurturing, and student-centered learning community.
Responsibilities include the following:
• Adhere to all HSS policies
• Follow the HSS daily timetable and timetable of lessons
• Arrive on time to all classes
• Conduct only teaching, preparation, or other school business between 7:30 am and 2:30 pm, except during the chai break.
• Construct a scheme of work for each semester
• Create daily, written lesson plans and maintaining an attendance log book, student behavior log book, and subject log book
• Formally assess students no fewer than 2 times per month
• Participate in professional development classes and workshops
• Complete beginning and end-of-term procedures before departing for end of term break
• Supervise student extra-curricular activities and assume leadership roles outside of the classroom
• Provide advice and encouragement to students when appropriate
• Tutor students during the individual preparation periods
• Accompany ill students to the city for medical treatment as requested
• Report policy violations to Managing Director in a timely manner
When serving as Teacher On Duty (TOD), additional responsibilities include:
• Inspect the premises, kitchen, library, dormitories, classes, and offices for cleanliness
• Ensure the availability of clean drinking water
• Supervise the production of food for punctuality, quantity, and quality
• Address illness or other health issues
• Grant permission for students to leave HSS
• Document all of the above in the “TOD” log book
