Location: Tanzania
Reports to: Senior Projects Manager and Senior Production Manager 
Contract duration:12 months (with possible extension)
Salary: Highly competitive within Tanzanian NGO market rates

Job purpose
The Senior Training Adviser will be responsible for the technical training skills of our radio training teams; he or she will also deliver high level one-off training to project partners. In addition, the postholder will work closely with radio production teams to strengthen the relationship between training and production. He or she will work with production to ensure that training meets both partner and BBC editorial objectives. The post holder will also establish strong relationships with our partner media houses.

Main duties
  • To train Tanzanian journalists as trainers with mentoring skills
  • To support the trainer/mentors to develop training plans.
  • To develop a training manual for the office for use by all staff
  • To deliver training to partner radio stations on a range of skills related to radio production including; radio station management, editorial, editing, package making, reporting, news etc.
  • To work closely with Research and Learning department on training needs assessments with partner stations
  • To develop and maintain strong and mutually respectful and beneficial relationships with partner radio stations, being responsive and effective in problem solving
  • To work closely with radio production teams to ensure harmonisation and alignment between training and BBC production, especially in cases where partners produce content for BBC
  • Attend editorial review meetings and provide constructive feedback and guidance to production teams
  • Provide feedback to partner radio stations on content produced for both BBC and local airwaves
  • Work with the project's senior mentors to develop systems for managing partners' output while not at the stations
  • Manage and nurture the relationship between training, projects, research and production.
  • Spot-check and analyse local and national programme in order to provide feedback to production teams
  • To ensure that all programming and training meet the highest BBC editorial standards, as well as delivering the project’s development objectives
  • To ensure that findings from research and audience feedback are used to refine and improve project outputs
  • To ensure training activities meet all contractual requirements of the project donors

Required skills, knowledge and experience
  • Strong editorial judgement evidenced through a distinguished radio journalism career
  • At least 10 years of radio production experience essential, including production of audience participation formats and political programming.
  • Experience of training radio journalists
  • Fluent in English and Swahili
  • Significant experience of planning training courses and training journalists in Africa essential.
  • Strong understanding of and commitment to issues of governance, transparency, accountability, financial sustainability and participation.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and influencing skills.
  • Experience of operating effectively in difficult, highly politically sensitive and often fluid environments
  • Good working knowledge of computer packages including Email, Word, Excel, PowerPoint

Desirable
Knowledge of BBC editorial guidelines or experience working with the BBC
Experience of training of radio trainers
Demonstrable understanding of the role of communications in development
