Senior Producer, Tanzania
Location: Tanzania
Reports to: Senior Production Manager
Contract duration: 12 months (with possible extension), anticipated start date February 2014
Salary: Highly competitive within Tanzanian NGO market rates
Job purpose
The Senior Producer will lead the production of radio programmes, these could include one or more of the following formats: magazine, drama, discussion, call-in. He or she will ensure the programmes produced maintain the highest editorial and professional standards in line with BBC editorial policy. He or she will be responsible for the creative direction of the programmes, ensuring they are engaging, popular and able to influence the uptake of positive behaviours in audiences.
Main Duties
• Ensure the programme(s) meets the editorial standards of the BBC
• Oversee and manage the day to day production of radio programme(s)
• Lead on long term planning and strategic direction for the programme(s)
• Manage the local production teams
• Closely work BBC Media Action programme manager & research team to ensure that the programme content is reaching and having an impact on audiences.
• Embed learning from research department into programme content and styles
• Script and oversee the presentation of the programme(s)
• Develop contacts within government and relevant sectors of Tanzania and ensure the continued access and independence of the programme(s)
• Lead and inspire the team
• Have a good understanding of Swahili language and be able to make the programme accessible to a broad range of audiences
Required skills, knowledge and experience
• Post holders will have considerable experience of producing radio programmes.
• Able to demonstrate a strong interest in, and proven commitment to media for development.
• Proven leadership and management skills of radio production teams.
• Sound understanding of transmission and recording systems, audio systems and communications equipment employed in the studio.
• Familiar with BBC editorial standards for radio, with a high degree of editorial awareness and judgment, combined with a thorough understanding of the aims and policies of BBC.
• Take responsibility for any brief that might be assigned by a programme or editor.
• Demonstrate excellent team leading skills and have the ability to manage a team, handling conflict effectively when necessary.
• Good communication skills
• A willingness to travel within Tanzania occasionally as the programme demands.
Desirable skills
• Experience in behavior change communications projects, preferably in the health, governance or resilience/livelihoods sectors.
• Prior experience with internationally reputable Swahili broadcaster.
